Beresheit – the first word in the Torah has many commentaries and explanations as to why the Torah starts off the way it does.  However, even the first letter of the word Beresheit holds meaning. It is curious as to why the Torah commences with ‘bet’, the second letter in the aleph-bet. One might think that it would make sense for the Torah to open up with the first letter, aleph. Surely HaShem could have made a word that means the same thing start with aleph. Interestingly, the last letter of the Torah is Lamed. Lamed and Bet spell ‘lev’, heart. What is the meaning behind this?

Lesson:

The Torah is not a history book, recounting generations, chronology, and genealogy, nor is it a story book spinning tales of conflict and triumph. Contained within the Torah, from the very first letter to the very last letter, is the heart of the Jewish people, that not only defines who we are, but keeps us alive. HaShem talks to every single Jew through the Torah, telling us how to perfect ourselves, how to grow as Jews, how to connect to our Creator! Everything we need to know is inside! Every company provides customers with instruction manuals to assemble even the simplest products and every puzzle has a picture for the costumer to know what they are supposed to be putting together. Of course HaShem gave us a picture and instruction manual for this complicated, but beautiful and remarkable journey called life – the Torah! Our hearts should pulsate with the desire to grow and to be close to Hashem, to feel His love for us as Jews.  HaShem expresses His love for us and the Jewish people through the Torah. We reciprocate and further cultivate our relationship with HaShem through learning Torah, integrating its concepts and lessons and strive to emulate our Creator. The Torah is the heart of the Jewish people as a nation, but also should be felt in all of hearts as well.
